A Thankful Thanksgiving

Country life is the best life

ideas for fall decorating
Will you be home for the holiday?

This year we are staying put
and won't be traveling to see family
in far away states, unfortunately.
It will just be the four of us, nice and quiet.

I am so thankful this year
for so many things.

But oddly enough,
we are trying something different this year.

We are not having
the traditional Thanksgiving feast
with the turkey, stuffing, potatoes,
cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie
that most of you will be sharing.

Say WHAT?

Nope.
We decided to make this year's meal
a themed one....
and since none of us are
particularly fond of turkey.
We are having a
"Thankful Thanksgiving".

By that, I mean that I have agreed
to make (or buy) something
that each of us would LOVE to eat,
a dish that we love,
our ultimate favorites ---
food we are most
"thankful"
for!

So here is our Thankful Menu:

Lasagna
(completely homemade from an local Italian Deli in town)
 Mac and Cheese
Stuffed Green Peppers w/Mashed Potatoes
Pesto and Goat Cheese Pasta Shells
Chopped Salad
and Texas Hot Cocoa Cake

I know some of you
are probably
gasping right about now!

We will have lots of leftovers
and everyone is extremely happy about this plan,
and I am very, very thankful about that!

 Re-purposed nightstand..awesome!
So I will be busy at my not-so-easy bake oven all day today preparing things!
(Cute little nightstand turned child's stove from Pinterest. :)

Hope this finds you
enjoying your holiday preparations today,
and may your Thanksgiving feast
be a most enjoyable one tomorrow.

I am thankful that you are my friend
and that you came by today.

Warm wishes to you and yours~
Alison

P.S. Is there anything on your menu
that is not a traditional Thanksgiving dish?

Alison, we'll have a traditional Thanksgiving at a family member's home, but often when we host Thanksgiving here it is not the traditional menu. Usually our menu features duck, capons, quail, or perhaps pheasant. ;-)
Enjoy your meal. It sounds great to me. A favorite something for everyone at the table.
Happy Thanksgiving! ~ Sarah

This year things are somewhat of a mess! My daughters new in-laws are sweet people but VERY unreliable. Just found out last night they are bringing his daughter who surprised him and came up from Tennessee. That is fine, then after being told the BIL and family were not coming, they now are. OK. I bought Chinet and decorative (turkey) paper plates, first time in 44 years the table will not be set beautifully with beautiful place settings and crystal. OH WELL! I will be concentrating on LOVE. For everyone at the table. It will be the tradional turkey and all the trimmings. Wishing you and yours a wonderful, happy, blessed Thanksgiving, Alison. Enjoy your day, it sounds GREAT to me!!!!!!!! XO, Pinky

I'm not gasping at all. One year we had steak and shrimp. A family get together is a family get together. It doesn't matter what is on the menu, only who is at the table. We'll be off to my brother-in-laws house. I just have to bring a pie.

While it is not a holiday this week for us Canadians, if I were to have a thankful dinner, my Grandma's homemade perogies with browned butter sauce would definately top my list of choices =)

My Dear Ms. Polo, I love your menu and I am sure you and your family will have the bestest of days. I a invited to an Orphans Dinner at a friend, since I seemed to have been left out with family, as they all seem to be going to an in-law's. I thought I might have to go to a soup kitchen and then I got invited to this fun party. I love turkey and the trimmings and never seem to get it that often, so I for one hope we are having that. I am in charge of cranberries. I have invented something new and will blog about it on Friday. That is f it is fit to eat. The other Orphans will be my testers. Anyhow, sorry for the rambling, I send you Best Thanksgiving Wishes from My Blog to Yours. Richard and Sissy Dog from My Old Historic House. Happy! Happy!

What a GReaT idea for your Thanksgiving dinner, and you can bet everyone will remember this Thanksgiving. It will be one of those "remember when" momemnts. Lasagna really sounds good to me!

On another note, thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. The responses I'm getting from family members where I am able to furnish them a picture of their relatives burial site so they can complete their family tree is amazing. They are truly grateful. I would be interested if your grandfather's farm with his two cemeteries are listed in the database. Someone out there is probably "looking".

Have a wonderful and truly memorable Thanksgiving this year!

Alison, while we will be having the traditional Thanksgiving meal, I think this is a fabulous idea!! Why waste time on things that you don't really enjoy? I think it's wonderful that you will enjoy the spirit of the holiday with your loved ones, enjoying the foods that you really love! HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

Alison,
You dinner sounds great! I will only have four of us, too. Dan, me and Mom and Dad. Jake will be with his Dad's family and of course, you know Taylor is out in Washington and coming for Christmas. Dan and I only eat fish, so I am making vegetable soup for the main course!
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!

Sounds fabulous to me Alison! We have done that before and loved it! We are going to the in-laws and it will be all traditional. I am on a diet....how much fun is that going to be??? I see many green beans in my future!

Have a great one!

Love your idea for Thanksgiving dinner. Mr. Tom Turkey will be happy about that! LOL. We will be having the traditional meal. However, I will be changing things up a bit. Normally there are so many relatives that we use paper/plastic plates, cups and utensils. This year there will only be 6 of us, so I am setting a proper table. Can't wait! Enjoy your fabulous meal and your family. Happy Thanksgiving.

Hey, that works for me. I never cook a turkey but my SIL does. I did make a wild rice and broccoli casserole that is a different side for us anyway. We are blessed to have our family and we are thankful for our blogging family too. Have a joyous day Alison.

It all sounds wonderful. It doesn't matter what you eat...it's who you eat it with. I am cooking everything this year and taking it all to my Mom's. She can no longer get out so we're taking the meal to her. My kids are home so I'm really happy about that. Have a wonderful weekend Alison!

Yep~ we are vegetarians so every year we have 'faux' foods instead of Turkey, gravy etc. Sounds like a fun day over at your place to me! Happy Thanksgiving!!

happy thanksgiving, alison!

it's also just the 4 of us this year (we can't even remember when the last time this has happened). and since last year we did an italian dinner in chicago, it's all traditional this year. making everyone's favorite dessert: gooey buttercake (Luke), special K bars (Jake) and pumpkin pie (Bill), and brownies with ganache (me).

blessings!

That sounds like a delight! We do that every Christmas meal, it's just whatever everyone is craving the most at the moment. Usually comes down to lasagna or Mexican...yum!

Have a blessed day.

After a fairly traditional dinner at my husband's side of the family yesterday, we are having a brunch with my side today - quiche, fruit, rolls, etc.

Yours sounded wonderful! (The leftovers, too.)
