It's Time to Check....

Clearly,
it is time
to check my sanity.

I am embarrassed to admit this to you,
but there have been several occasions
where I have purchased things on Ebay or Etsy
only to find upon receiving them that they were
NOT AT ALL
what I had envisioned.

Okay, maybe "envisioned"
is not the word
I should be using....
 "expected"
yes, that is a better word.

For example....
just last week,
I saw some antique English potted meat
and mustard jars on Etsy.
I thought, how sweet!
These are perfect for the shop!

So I bought the jars quick
 before someone else did ....
they were such a great price and all.

Well, the anticipated box arrived in the mail.
I opened it. First one lid, then the next lid.....
and the box was empty.

EMPTY?

Oh my goodness,
they
 forgot
 to pack the bottoms!!!

So I went back online and opened my account
to contact the seller,
when much to my dismay....
I noticed that the listing
was for the lids.

The lids.
 Only.

It is a cute little lid..... right?

Are you kidding me?
No wonder they were such a good deal.

But this is not the first time
this has happened to me.
There have been several times
when I looked only at the photos
and did not read the descriptions.
Ooops.

I once bought a gorgeous
French ornately carved armoire.
(Turns out... it was for a doll house.)
No wonder the price was so reasonable.

(I'm just kidding. LOL)

Sanity check? Yes!
It's official. I have lost it.

Even worse..... I can't remember what I lost?

Has this ever happened to you?
(Please lie and tell me it has!!!)

Does anyone have some bottoms they would like to sell me? Cheap???!!!

Um ya...all the time... win some, loose some.... but costly mistakes stink!!! I just had "mistake #10000000

Oh Alison, you're not insane. We've all made mistakes. I once spotted a pair of carved french chairs at a garage sale. It was late in the sale, and I couldn't figure out why they were still there. My lucky day. I purchased them, took them home, and began to sand them down. PLASTIC! Yes, I admit it. Me, the queen of furniture, was so excited, I didn't check close enough. May explain why they were so lightweight.

LOL Alison. You are too funny. At least it wasn't a HUGELY expensive mistake. You are definitely NOT the only one that happens to.
Now, what are those round clay/pottery?? balls in the photo with the lids?.. . I DO wish you had an online store. I'd love to buy some lovely old things from your shop.
:)..I'm still giggling about the lids.

I've bought several items on EBay, and been sorely disappointed upon their arrival.
Most often it will be a Staffordshire plate where the transferware was incomplete on the pattern, and just recently I bought a miniature Windsor chair, about the size of a large thimble.
I was so let-down :(
Seems like we are all vunerable to these oversights !
I would be interested in purchasing the lids, when you set a price, bottom or not...

Those lids would be great in a shadow box.

Oh dear. I don't do Ebay or Etsy or any shopping on line cause I'm scared to. LOL I too, love those lids and those balls. We all make mistakes but don't forget "buyer beware". That's about all I remember from Economics class.:-) The lids do have character though!

Oh Alison welcome to my world! When I do something like this I try very hard to keep it to myself. You are a good sport to blog about it. Hope you are having a great weekend...

So sorry to be laughing my head off right now. No, no bottoms here!!

Alison, you make me smile. I'm sure we've all done similar things. It's easy. I was high bid on a faience platter in the UK several years ago. I knew the price was too good to be true. Well, long story short, the platter never arrived. Check cashed, letters exchanged with excuse after excuse, but no platter. Chalk it up to experience!
You know, the lids are the best part. Just display them in a vignette. ;-)

I don't shop Ebay very often, just not sure about even the descriptions. You are just fine, the lids are fabulous and nope, I don't have any bottoms. Hugs, Marty

Oh hon...I'm so sorry I'm just cracking up! Yeah, I would've kept it to myself, because I'd be so mad...but who cares after all, they were probably a "good price"!!
I never buy Etsi or e-bay, I'm afraid they might send me all the way here, broken china or something, so, no, I don't order. Have a sweet evening, have a glass of red wine, unwind and forget it!
Love, FABBY

thats funny! I have to tell you I sold a set of 4 teacups on my etsy shop, then realized I had 4 saucers but only 3 teacups...I sent a note twice to the buyer, but still have not heard back. they sent payment, but seems like they totally forgot about buying this set!! slipped their minds I guess. I don't want to send it unless they approve (with a credit for the missing 4th cup of course).

It sure has!I feel faint when I bid on something and a fog comes over my brain. BTW I adore the lids.

Yes, I have purchased things on ebay without really reading through the description....

In fact the other day, I bid on a french confit pot, that I thought was an amazing price. Then I looked at the pictures again and the color they called "ochre" was more green that yellow/gold in some of the pictures. Other pictures showed it yellow/gold. So I emailed them and they said it was green....and suggested that I don't bid if I didn't like the color. So I retracted my bid siting wrong description....

Yes. That dollhouse furniture has gotten me twice! I also purchased what I thought was a lot of used antique watch parts but when they arrived it was solely the tin cases.
My fortuitous finds, on the other hand, have more than made up for the egregious ones!

They are lovely lids however! x Sharon

I love the dollhouse armoire story. It is hilarious! Kinda sounds like my story with the hat box that I posted, then I bought an old portable type-writer the other day, same situation as the hat box. I just think it is a good deal and I jump on it without even checking things out. Sad thing is, my goof-ups weren't online, they were right in my face for me to look at and check out! Nope, your not crazy!

Kathy @ Creative Home Expressions said...

It definitely has, Alison! I have been trying to be better about reading the full descriptions and even grab a ruler to get an idea of what a measurement actually looks like. I love these lids though! You could display them in so many ways.

Well, in the sellers defense, people have been selling and collecting, just lids, like these for years. I know what you mean, I get so excited I forget to look for cracks, chips and yes, read the whole description. I am so sorry.Patients is a virtue.Richard at My Old Historic house.

I haven't had that exact same problem. But I have purchased things on ebay only to discover that I already had the exact same thing. No wonder I liked it!!
