Plaid Equine Bedroom

Busy weekend here!

A flea market purchase
on Saturday
brought about some necessary changes
in one of the bedrooms.
I decided to pull together things
we had and create a cozy plaid
equestrian space.

Here is the room before the pieces were added:

Just so you know...
the parts aren't exactly perfect --
but I worked with what we had
around the house
swirling things around
to see what might work.

Yesterday, I went to a huge flea market
out in the country west of Chicago
that is held monthly at one of the county fairgrounds.

I unexpectedly came across two
plaid twin upholstered headboards
for sale --$55 for the pair.
Winning!

So I brought them home.
The price was right but the plaid was a bit crooked
and as it turned out did not match with the existing
plaids I had collected. So I stripped one of them down
and recovered the headboard frame with some
red ultrasuede I had in my stash.

So it went from this:

To this:

Then I brought in some lamps
(i know, they need new lampshades )
but I did not have matching side tables
or bedside stands.

So pulled in a pine trunk
and nightstand but the heights were off.
So I stacked some vintage wicker storage suitcases and I was able to get
the lamps to sit at the same
height -- which is important to me!

Blurry photo - oops. Need to stand STILL!

Next ... I decided to take another
flea market find ...
a vintage
original pastel drawing of a horse
(that I LOVE)
but needs to be reframed,
and used it as a focal point
above the new red headboard.

Isn't he handsome?

It looks so much like a photograph,
I wish I could find the artist
who drew this! Very talented person. :)

I flanked it with two old
framed horse tack prints
and then
started layering in the
yummy plaids.

Cozy, right?

Adjoining bathroom.

RL wallpaper in attached bathroom coordinates
with the plaid bedding.

The ultrasuede duvet cover is a dark navy but in the sunlight it appears bright blue. Odd!

My baby boy used to sleep in this room! It is sad to think he is grown
and gone from our plaid nest. Miss him terribly but he still has a place
to rest his weary head when he comes to visit. :)

(His baby shoes are still in a drawer
in the room! They make me smile.)
Thanks for stopping by today.
Always nice to see you.

Love the changes! I'm really loving plaids this year, found one pillow, need to find a throw and so on and so on. All in time huh? Love the baby shoes.

Wow, Alison you transformed that space and made it seem effortless. Love the plaids! The wall color looks like my bonus room walls where hopefully soon part of it will become another space for guests. I have got to start moving a ton of crap out!!

That is absolutely gorgeous- magazine worthy. It does kind of give you a clutch in your heart, doesn't it, when you realize that you will never decorate for that "little boy" again? The one that is locked in your heart forever.

Your room is wonderful. I love all the red and blue and plaids and patterns you have pulled together there. xo Diana

I couldn't wait to pin some of these to my Tartan Love Pinterest Board, so already have.
I read Chicago got some crazy weather today. Hope you are warm and cozy! ~ Sarah

Alison,
What a great find (the headboards) and I love them in red. The room looks great. It's always a mixed blessing when our "babies" grow up and move away. The good news is they will always come back for visits and they will enjoy their old rooms, especially your updated version.

Karen
