Click. Snap .... need your candid thoughts!

I really need a new camera!

As you might know,
many of my photos are taken with my
Motorola Cliq cellphone,
or my old point and shoot 35mm Kodak.

I don't want to spend a fortune,
and it has to be user friendly.

I had a good camera
about seven years ago
with two special lenses,
and then I dropped it.

Oh snap!
(The camera shop said it
would be cheaper to buy a
new camera than it would be to fix it.)
So, I don't want to go that route again.

Do you have a camera that you love
and recommend?

I have a Sony A55, which I love. It's middle of the road as far as cost, but it does everything I need it to. I've also heard great things about Canon and Nikon. I think the key thing for purchasing a camera is to find a camera store with actual photography professionals...not a big box store. Professionals will know what they are talking about, be able to demonstrate all the features, match the camera to your needs, not try to oversell you a camera that you do not need, and provide great service!

I have a Kodak AF 26X WIDE ANGLE OPTICAL ZOOM CAMERA. It works better than the point a shoot cameras.I would recommend spending a little more and getting one that has better "close ups".

YES! I love my Nikon D3000 it allows me to take credit for really good pictures, even though I know next to nothing about photography! Its very user friendly but seriously takes AMAZING pictures.....don't take my word for it, just look at all the consumer reviews and reports. Good luck and happy snapping.

I have a panasonic Lumix. My husband bought it for me last year, and I love it. I am still learning as I go. The reviews were awesome and for the price it can't be beat. Before I invested in a mac daddy, I figured I have to get to know a middle of the road. This camera has far exceeded my expectations.

I love my camera, Alison! My hubby got it for me two years ago. I had a point and shoot and as a shaky person that is not the best camera for someone like me to have! Too many blurry pictures. I impress myself sometimes with the pictures I get from the camera I have now! : ) It is the Sony NEX-3. I've only played around with a few features {like blurring the background} but I am really happy with it.

Alison,I use a Canon PowerShot
Elph 300HS. A point and shoot and great size for the purse. It takes a pretty good picture, then I use ACDSee to spice up the photos.
Good luck. Love the olden pics on this post!

Alison, I recently bought a Nikon D-5100 and love its features. Not overly expensive (about $900), and it has been easy to figure out as I venture out of "auto" mode! LOL I think putting money into lenses, instead of the camera body, is the way to go, so in addition to the 2 lenses that I now have, I'm saving up for a macro.
Good luck on your decision! ~ Sue

The options out there boggle my mind. Meanwhile, I am content with my cell phone camera. With Picasa I can produce satisfactory photos for my needs.

I can see the importance of a better camera when your income depends on it...but when I DID have a camera, I never had it when I needed it. My cellphone has taken care of THAT problem :)

Good luck in your search!

I love my canon rebel 3ti, but it is a bit expensive. I don't have to worry about dropping it though. We bought the service warranty at Best Buy so if it breaks they either fix it or replace it. The camera before this one took good pics, too and it is just a good canon point and shoot. It is a canon powershot SX 20 IS. It is the middle of the road in price range.

Alison, I'm probably the last one to ask, as I use two 'point and shoot' cameras. I like the small size and simplicity of them, plus I'm still learning about lighting, angles, composition, etc. and a more complex and expensive camera probably wouldn't help me in that department. LOL When one of these conks out, or I get better at photography, I'll probably upgrade..slightly. I think Canon makes one that can function as a point and shoot, or with other settings that you can control.
Pat @ Back Porch Musings had a good comment/post on camera selection. (Photography 101)

I have a Canon G12. I am still on auto for picture taking. It is small enough to put in your purse. Photography is a whole 'nother ballgame.....

Alison I have a Nikon D-70 and I LOVE it, it is bigger than I would like and heavy but I've not been able to find any smaller camera that will be as reliable...It is fool proof for this very amature photographer

Take a look at the gorgeous photos Slim Paley takes with a Panasonic Lumix and puts on her lovely blog. I have the same camera & I don't think mine look as good as hers so there is something to be said for the hand that snaps the picture.
BTY-love your home and your taste!
Best regards, Ruth

Hi Allison...

Best wishes on your camera shopping, my friend! Last autumn I bought a new camera. I wanted something with a few more options that a "point and shoot" camera. After doing a bit of research, I decided to get a Pentax K-x and I just love it! I really am interested in photography but I'm just an amateur and believe me...I am sooo technologically challenged! Hehe! I really haven't had too much trouble figuring out my Pentax, although I admit that I have much more to learn. Hope that you find one that suits you, my friend!

I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your piece in Belle Inspiration! It was fabulous! Congratulations, sweet lady!

Warmest autumn wishes,
Chari
