Hedgehogs Growing Old with Me

When I was little
my best friend Jill
had a shelf in her kitchen
where her mother kept antique collectibles.

There were wooden bowls,
antique kitchen tools, a coffee grinder,
and a cute little couple
of Steiff hedgehogs.

I loved these little rubber faced guys.....
they had a lot of character.
Of course, we all looked a lot younger back then.

Many years later,
Jill's parents moved to a smaller home,
and I received a small package in the mail
with a sweet note and
the aging pair of hedgehogs.

When they were given to Jill's mom
in the 1940's, their sweet rubber faces
were perfectly smooth.

But with each passing decade,
the signs of aging began and they
developed wrinkles and laugh lines,
just like me.

(Found the two hedge piglets
in recent years
to complete their family. )

Now Micki and Mecki
look more like grandparents though!

They are a sentimental reminder to me
of a cherished friendship,
a second mother who cared for me,
and how true friendship transcends
time (and wrinkles!)

What about you....
are you

pro-wrinkles

or a

 prolong your youth
advocate
(with a little help from science)

Oh they are just precious and such sweet treasures from dear friends. Yes, my wrinkles are now crevices and I own up to every one of them. At my age, what else is there to do. Besides, it's what's inside, not the outside that matters. Great post of special friend and treasures. Hugs, Marty

How adorable! I have never seen these stuffed toys before and the aging process has only made them more special. I am 'au natural' - no fillers here :-) I keep moisturizing and also stay out of the sun unless I'm wearing sunscrean. (can't say I did that 30years ago though) Pamela

Alison, these little guys are precious, but even more so the story of how they came to live at Polohouse. I'm so sentimental about things like this. I love this story. And, I'm definitely aging right along with these two. I'm au natural with my skin and hair color. ;-)
Thanks for sharing these sweet little hedgehogs. ~ sarah

What a wonderful and endearing story! They are so cute.....and what do they say about wrinkles- that they only show you where the smiles have been! I like to think of them that way:)

I've never seen anything like these, Alison, they are great! What a lovely gift your friend's Mom made to you with these; it's obvious you have fond memories of what they represent. I've thought of that myself and I prefer to admire the celebrities who do not go for the youth fix. They seem to have aged so gracefully. Some who get surgery or botox look almost freakish. I will not be looking to turn back the clock. The only thing I do and will do for awhile, I'm sure, is color my grays. But I've been doing that for years since I got my first gray hair at 18!

What a sweet story Alison, but I have to say I have never, ever heard of, or seen any of these little creatures before. Oh, and how thoughtful of your second mom to think of you when they were needing a new home.

I'll take every wrinkle I can get because I've earned every one! What a great post. I love it when bloggers share just a little bit of their real lives. I enjoyed the story of your friend and her mother. Priceless relationship. Have a great Sunday. Your storms right now are headed our way. Definitely staying inside!

Whats wrong with a wrinkle or two. add charm, character and strength. Those two little critters are as as cute as as can be. I would be proud of them also. Richard at My Old Historic House

How sweet! Jill's parents rock to give them to you. Botox is from Satan, by the way. Mr. Art @ Home is in medicine, and he says people are crazy to inject such a dangerous toxin so close to their brains. I had rather have brains than a smooth face ANY DAY OF THE WEEK (and twice on Sundays).... ;P

Mr. & Ms. Hedgehog agree with me, too.....

Have a blessed Sunday!

Alison, Your hedgehogs are so darling and I love the story about them and your second mom.
The only real hedgehog I ever saw was when we lived in Germany. It was under the rose bushes and so cute.
About aging, at my age I'll take every year I can get and be thankful.:) I just use moisturizer and sunscreen. Wish I had done that when I was in my 20s, but I don't think they made sunscreen back then. LOL
Hugs,
Babs
