Blanket of Webs

This evening as the sun was setting.
my husband noticed the yard
had a strange reflection.

He asked me to step outside
and as we stood on the patio and
we looked out into the yard,
there was a blanket of
spider webbing
that went from the patio to the
fence line in the front yard -- nearly
two acres wide.

It's barely visible unless the sun hits it
(and I am sure my neighbors passing by
would not even notice it).
The sweeping webs
are strung on bushes and trees
and over the mulch beds too.

I tried to get some good photos of it to share.
My husband suggested that I
 get down very low
to see if that helped capture
the odd phenomenon on film
(which I did)
so now I am
itching and scratching like crazy
-- of course --
believing that
those tiny arachnids
are probably on me now too.
Uggggh!

I have a bad case of the
HEEBIE JEEBIES
as we used to say as kids!

Has this ever happened in your yard?

Very strange!

I really like spiders in the garden but not on me! I have never seen anything like this before. Fascinating.

Ewwww...that is kind of disturbing!!!! We get a lot of spiders here by the water and they will cover your house from roof to basement if you don't spray for them...and we do...despite all the spider lovers out there. Their "poop" will eat the finish right off your siding!

If that continues I would probably call an agriculture agent (or county something) to have them look at it. I think that is really weird. xo Diana

Yes, actually it HAS happened in our yard a time or two. They were very white and maybe 4"-6" in length/width. Once when I was telling someone about them they replied, "Oh, we call them fairy handkerchiefs!" I have no idea what they are or why they appear so very occasionally.

OK. After I commented, I was still curious. I googled just that - fairy handkerchiefs, images - and found many photos. Clicking on some of them, I was taken to pages that explained them. There was one particularly that looked just like ours did laid out across our entire lawn!

Wow, that is pretty wild! The good thing is, maybe they are catching all the bad bugs!

I have seen this before but usually in late summer when the dew is heavier. We have a jack pine tree that has it's branches wrapped in webs in August. It is neat to see but, like you, gives me the heebie jeebies too. We're finally getting some spring weather here in the east! Have a great week.

Alison,
Not so much on the grass but between every fence post and the house there are webs. It must be their season to "nest". :-)
