Do you collect
"vinegar Valentines"?
My mother told me about these
years ago, and though I do not
have any of them,
some of them are pretty entertaining.
These greeting cards, or rather
insult cards were decorated with a caricature
and an insulting poem to be given to a spinster,
floozy, whiner, etc.
They were first produced in the
mid-1800's and they
enjoyed their greatest popularity
in the first quarter of the 20th century.
These postcards were usually sent anonymously
and postmasters sometimes confiscated them
stating they were unfit to be mailed!
Can you believe that?

I would not have enjoyed
receiving one of these on
Valentine's Day!
Would you?

Great post! I especially enjoyed the many examples of vinegar valentines. My grandmother kept a diary when she was a teen from 1911-14. She got really caught up in sending vinegar valentines. I've been posting her diary entries and background information a hundred years to the day after she wrote them.
