Overnight Guest Preparations

Roses & limes

When preparing for
overnight house guests,
what do you do
to make them feel
extra special?

white linens
Fresh crisp bed linens?

Maybe some chocolates on their pillows?

Do you pre-scent the room with perfume candles?

Do you add an etched crystal water carafe to their bedside table?

Have a little collection of bedside reading selections -- magazines or books?

Do you add a fresh stack of towels on a chair in the corner .....

....with some fabulous guest soaps?

Please tell me, what are your secrets for ensuring happy, content guests???

I like to have snacks for them. I also have tea and coffee all set up just in case they are early risers.

Really the only guests I get are my son and his family. I always put clean sheets on the bed. Dust and vacuum. Clean the bathroom and put out fresh towels.

I do love to pamper my guests. On occasion I have placed lavendar oil with a cotton ball on the nightside table to tuck under their pillowcase. I enjoy purchasing seasonal bath and body soap and lotion in the guest bathroom and making the bed up nice and tight. Last spring when my sister and her friend came to help me with my spring FAUX flower show I pampered them with fresh flowers from Trader Joe's. Of course they thought they were silk! LOL!

I usually have fresh flowers, clean towels and sheets (of course!), and a comfy place to sit. I leave new toothbrushes, individual bottles of shampoo, mouthwash, etc., in the bathroom. The more hospitable, the better.

Since most of our guests are family, clean sheets, reading materials and clean the bath of course!!

I clean & cook like crazy, freshen up the bed sheets and towels. We have overnight guests quite often and I love it!

Hi Alison:

Beautiful little post. I love pampering my house guests and I too love to fuss. Fresh white sheets, candles and fluffy towels which I ususlly tie with a ribbon and tuck an initialed soap under the bow. If it happens to be my closest friend from Michigan, she always gets a wrapped gift . . . . as I do when I go to her home...and always fresh flowers. ox m.a.

We have guests a lot in Michigan. I try to keep it casual...fresh towels with a pretty soap on top, a carafe and glass with good water {not from the tap, it's horrible there!} and some books and magazines.

I like to have some goodies set up in the kitchen for the morning and fresh flowers everywhere!

XO,
Jane

I am proud to say looks like I have got it covered..phew! I actually love setting up a room for a guest....beautiful soaps, a burning candle in the bathroom, a small carafe of water, a bud vase with a few pertty blooms and reading material are staples for me. On occasion if its my parents I put a special little treat and newspaper on the bed for them (since I know what they love) The key is making them feel special.

Clean rooms and lots of good fresh home cooked food. I am about to have an entire house full of teens for an entire weekend-that ought to be a hoot.

I love having guests overnight. I stock the bathroom with everything I can think of that they might have forgotten: new toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, blow dryer, tissues, lotions etc. Fresh towels and soap, and of course clean sheets and a comfy blanket in the winter. Magazines and snacks in the room and I cook ahead of time: breakfasts and dinners. XO, Pinky

Love guests...I always have fresh flowers on the bedside table, luxurious soap and amenities of shampoo, etc in case they forget that little something. There is usually a welcome to my home basket waiting for them on the bed. If they are newcomers to our state, I load the basket with goodies appropriate to the area (candies, magazines, water, local wine with a souvenir glass, etc)..I have a placard on the door with their name on, i.e., "Smith Suite".. Chocolates in a crystal dish with a card with a "thought for the day'...

My favorite thing to do is put out a framed picture of my guest(s) and their significant other, or their pet etc. In the bathroom I leave a collection of travel size items they may need such as toothpaste, floss, sea sponges, shower cap, ear plugs, sleeping mask, etc.

*** Living in the beautiful desert, we verrry frequently have guests "ESCAPING" from the "COLDER STATES", to visit and also get away from the snow, relax, play some golf, shop Scottsdale, etc. Added to what you stated above (except I used UNscented candles, being aware of possible alleries of our guests)...: I also like to include:

* "Fun and/or silly" Arizona T-Shirts (for sleeping or a cover-up after swimming/sunbathing), & baseball caps that match... They are set out on the bed as a "WARM WELCOME", w/ a few "fun lil' gifts"... "with love n' licks", from our dogs (Yes, I am a BIIIIG dog-lover and EVERYbody knows it & loves our wonderful, loving, well-behaved hunting dogs!!!)...

* A large antique grapevine basket holds, amongst other than the "normal" things, a sleeve of signature golf balls from our CC, and SUNSCREEN (a "must" they often forget in the summer~)... A packet of info on the Tucson/Scottsdale areas of interest and shopping, etc...(Even if it's their 3rd or 4th visit).. Some sweets n' nuts along with a small cactus gift (only if they're driving here, not flying)...

* Small Coffee Pot (& fixings for Tea), plus a bowl of varied, fresh fruits (1/2 in their little fridge, and 1/2 on their counter).

* Added to a yummy, UNCLUTTERED space, and enjoying desert views thru FRESHLY WASHED, U*B*E*R~CLEAN WINDOWS always seems to set the mood for a fun visit... (Well, THAT/THOSE annnnnd the chilled champagne & strawberries for an "OFFICIAL WELCOME" seem to "work"!!!

We actually have my BFF (of a gazillion years!) and her husband (I suspect he's MY husband's BFF, except guys just don't "talk" that way! Smiles!) arriving in about 10 days, and YES, I can't WAIT!!!!!!!! (THEIR "welcome gifts" are VALENTINE GIFTS!... natch!!!).

Warmest wishes,

The only guests we ever have are teenage girls. They just want to be fed and then left alone. Lovely post, and your ideas are very thoughtful for guests.

Alison -
Since I am an early riser and prefer getting up before our guests to get a jump on the day, I surprise them with a weather report slid under their door. Often four star hotels will do this. I have a blank template on my computer with little pictures of clouds, rain, sun, etc. I fill in the temp and indicate any further weather news. I also have a space that I might remind them of the activity of the day and indicate any wardrobe ideas that they might need. It helps them dress for the day. Then, I very quietly slip this under the door of the guest room. One guest thought he had received a bill, though! We are still laughing about that!

When we have had guests I always remind the kids not everyone sleeps as sound as them, to PLEASE pick up their underwear after they shower, and don't load up your plate at dinner like you are the only one at the table. Then for the guests I make a big basket of snacks I know they eat and like and juices so when their own kids are hungry they don't have to feel awkward invading my cabinets for a quick bite early in the morn, or late at night.
