Favorite Thing: Home Fragrance

How do you scent your home?

I was working on a post
of some of "my favorite things"
and as I was writing about one of the items ...
I realized it needed it's own post.

An Antique French Lampe Berger. Source

Do you know about
Lampe Berger catalytic diffusers?
(Most of my friends had never heard of these so just in
case you don't know about them,  I wanted to share
the secret of what makes my house smell wonderful!)

A Lampe Berger is a French fragrance lamp,
also known as a catalytic lamp diffuser,
and it disperses a mixture
of ozoalcohol and a scented perfume oil
using a heated stone attached to a cotton wick.
It scents your home and kills germs
and bacteria in the air at the same time!

Here's the official scoop.... in case you don't know about them:

In 1898, a Parisian pharmacist, Maurice Berger, began trying to find a process to purify and kill the bacteria in the air of hospitals and medical institutions. He discovered a way to burn ozoalcohol through a stone in a catalytic lamps that reduced the amount of bacteria and germs in the air. Through the years their initial purpose was changed when he realized that he could also add perfume scents to the mixture so a room not only was healthier, with less bacteria and germs,  but he could also scent the air at the same time.

Thus the Lampe Berger was born, along with its unique and constantly improved process that has proven its efficiency over time.  Lampe Berger Lamp came to interest the greatest designers of the time: Lalique, Haviland,  Galle, the Daum crystal glass works and Baccarat . . .  Lampe Berger became a feature at the salons of the Belle Epoque, and the oil lamp developed a new function, adding fragrance – for scented oils that made Lampe Berge even more popular.

You can collect the antique and vintage
French bottles designed through the years
by many, many famous designers.

LAMP SOURCES

You can buy copies of them many places,
including Michael's craft stores if you don't want to invest in a Lampe Berger lamp.
They all perform the same function.

FRAGRANCE OIL SOURCES

There are several companies
that provide fragrant oils also.
I have bought them at gift shops, online, through Ebay stores, and Pier One has a line as well.
There is a company called La-Tee-Da that has a nice collection of scents for lamps too.

Here is why I love them:
I am a scented candle junkie ....
but they are dangerous and I occasionally
leave my open flame unattended.
(Two friends had house fires from votives burning.... yikes.)

With these lamps,
you light the stone for just two minutes
to heat the stone to the temperature
you need to diffuse the liquid in the wick.
Then you blow it out.

Allow it to dissipate for 20-30 minutes
and then cap it off..... or not?
It will scent most of my entire home.
No kidding.

If I forget to put the top on... no big deal.
You can leave your house
without ever worrying that you left
an open flame candle burning.
(And when you get home, your house will smell heavenly!)

It kills germs in the air.
When we are sick in the winter
and can't open all the doors and windows
to let the germs out....
I burn the lamp.

I can't tell you how much I love this thing.
They come in all shapes and sizes
to match ANY decor.

I love scents and delicious smells in the home; we used to make at our past ceramic. co. for a company in LA, Ca.... difusers to put the aromatic oils and burn them, I use Cardamom a lot, it's so fresh, the aroma enters your nose, opening up our nostrils. Yeah, I love French Lavander too. Your bottles are stunning each one of them. The Baccarat one is gorgeous. Thank you for sharing a little history of the fragances too. Love, FABBY

Alison -
Thanks for the tip. I am also a candle junky but quit using them several years ago after leaving the house a couple of times with them burning. Have been using the wood reeds lately. I'm one that has never heard of this ...... so thanks so much. Definitely putting it on my list to try.

I think that there's almost nothing worse than those air fresheners, like Glade, that smell so perfectly awful! Yet I love a wonderful lavender candle. I'm going to give this a try. If you like it, I'm sure it's lovely. And yes, you should be paid for your endorsement...a lifetime free supply! And thanks for the tip!

Alison,
Thanks so much for sharing . I'm a scented candle junkie and m y boys are forever blowing them out on me because they think the house is going to catch on fire. This idea sounds like it could make us all very happy. I'll have my lovely scented home and there will be no more flames for my boys to blow out!

I am gaga over Aveda's pure and lavender candles. I had thought about posting about them. I had never heard of these contraptions before, but I must say I am intrigued. Do they really kill bacteria in the air because if they do, I am in! I need to put one in Shanley's dorm because she is a walking petri dish!

My favorite scent for home is Pier One's Citrus Cilantro ... yummy! For myself, a bit of real lavender cologne from the Scottish shop in Williamsburg does the trick. A couple of quick spritzes, and tension melts away. Aaahhhh.

Alison, I know of these but have never tried one. You have encouraged me to change that. ;-)
I don't like to burn candles either. Too risky and they leave soot. Thanks for sharing all the history on these.

Sounds wonderful...especially the lavender. I love scented candles but don't usually burn them except at Christmas. I am amazed that one will scent your whole house. I think I may have to stop at Pier 1...

How interesting! I've never heard of these before. I used to use scented candles, but I'm so picky about the scent that I just gave up on them. I LOVE candles though but I'm always afraid I'll leave them burning.Lavender is one of my all time favorites, too.
I'm checking out the lamps at Pier One. Thanks for the great ideas.
Hugs,
Babs

I've seen these around, but never knew how they actually worked. Now, I'll look at them a little more closely. My home presently has the aroma of JR les chic and tres' horse la fume (Jack Russells & Horses). This might help us. Debi

Alison, I've been reading your blog for a few months now and find it such a joy and inspiration. I love, love your home, your antiques, your design and decor. After reading your post about Lampe Berger, I bought my first Lampe today and my home is filled with the most lovely scent. It took me just a few minutes to fall in love with Charleston as a fragrance and I'm enjoying the scent as I write tonight. Thank you for all your posts; I am a huge fan! Fondly, Nan Parker
