Croquet anyone?

When you look at these....
do they
affect you

at all?

Do they make you think of summer?

Do they remind you of games played
in the sunshine when you were little?

Do they reach somewhere
into your inner child
and say...
collect me?

That's how they affect me.
I am soooooo drawn to them.

It doesn't even matter
how they come to me....
 in a complete set,
or not.

Or in the form
of a hammer
or not.

I love it all.

A bouquet of vintage goal stakes.

This vintage slide top box reminds me of painted croquet sets.

It all makes me smile.

And what could be wrong with that?

:)

Hi Alison! Gorgeous photos! All the items you had in your post just melt me with their patina. Croquet equipment reminds me of POLO items I have seen. I know the game is different but they both seem like classy sports.

They remind me of summer, with the whole family playing together. A fime before sitting in front of the television every night.

Those are fine collection and I would love to have a collection!

Yes, love it all. Our good friends bought us a set for the B&B when we were running it and I never got them out of the box. I will be displaying them in my new room when the contruction is finished!

I loved playing croquet as a child. Wish I knew what happened to our old set. Seeing your vintage pieces makes me wish for some of my own. ;-)
Our friends in Maine had croquet set up on their large grassy lawn.

They sure do remind me of summer childhood. In fact, I was babysitting 2 little boys and one of them wonked me on the nose with a mallet. Boy! Did that hurt. That was the end of that game! Have a great weekend. Pam

I love croquet. Finally found an old set this summer. Funny thing is that no one wants to play with me!

Croquet balls and mallets bring back fun memories. I remember having a set when I was a child, but living in the hills of north Georgia, finding a level place to play was sometimes tricky. As an adult I've played, and it was so much fun...we didn't wear 'croquet whites' though. :)
Wishing I had an old set now.

It's a game that every family played in the early sixties. At least our did! Tons of fun! Beautiful pic's too.

Alison,
You know I love croquet sets! The one you saw was one of about 4 different vintage sets I have, 2 of them I found for $1.00 each at yard sales.
I always have the balls out in an old wood bowl or a glass jar depending on the look I want! I can't pass them up! What could possibly say "summer" more!
Rebecca
P.S. I must confess that I sometimes switch them out for my jar of vintage pool balls which I also love!

Hi Alison- My dad taught us how to play croquet when I was about 4 or 5. When ever I see croquet game pieces I think of him. We have a nice old set that is from the 40's or 50's. It's the one my dad owned. I just love it. But do we ever play? No.
Thanks for a memorable post.

i love the chippy ones that have been played so much they are hanging on for dear life. i used to sell stuff at flea markets pnce in awhile and never had trouble selling these sets.

you can probably tell i don't gravitate towards as much of the old stuff as i used to. my taste at the moment is all about handmade and contemporary creations. so i bet we won't fight over stuff if we shop together!

I buy every set I can and they always sell. When I decorate cottages for people I always suggest a set somewhere, just completes that look. And yes they say summer. I did a post on Staffordshire dogs just for, have you been by yet? Thanks, Richard from My Old Historic House.
