Are you looking
for ways
to add touches
of English Country
to your home?
As you know,
I am a huge fan of all things
English Country.
The look is relaxed and comfortable,
cozy and layered.
The look is collected and cherished,
timeless and inviting.
What's not to love?
Here is a little list
of
of
12
things
that you can add
to your decor
that will bring in that
quintessential
English country charm.
1
WALKING STICKS & CANES
Add a collection of canes and walking sticks to your entry hall. |
2
STAFFORDSHIRE POTTERY
Nothing screams
English antique collectibles
like Staffordshire pottery.
It's really a MUST if this is the look
that you wish to achieve.
It has been around for over 250 years
and manufactured and copied
on and off through the years
so it can be found in
a wide price range. Older rare pieces
are extremely pricey, but if you look --
you can find a piece or a collection
that is perfect for you.

Staffordshire here.
Have a pair of these sweet little lions on bases that I bought because of their kind expressions though they are reproductions. |
We found a matching pair of these large handsome glass-eyed lions in a Paris flea market years ago. |
This little Dalmation dog has a poorly repaired tail -- though he is very old. |

EQUINE OR CANINE ARTWORK

I have mostly equine --- for obvious reasons. :D |
7
PAISLEY/PLAID/CHINTZ/TICKING
Though we don't have any chintz
or ticking here,
we do have an abundance
of paisleys and plaids,
tweeds, herringbones,
and a few printed florals.

ENGLISH CROCKERY
I'm smitten with the advertising print designs on old British crockery. |
9
ENGLISH OAK
English oak biscuit barrel |
If you are looking for
furnishings,
add imported English oak to your home.
Antique English oak hutch |
English oak has a warm golden-yellow tone
and takes stain well.
Considered the most durable and beautiful of the oaks -- harder than American oak -- with a satiny finish.
You will find pub tables, hutches,
sideboards, side tables,
and wooden chairs in this style.
You can also collect candlesticks, biscuit jars
and lovely old wooden boxes.

ROSES
You can put roses in vases,
or add roses in the way of fabrics or wallpapers,
or framed in prints on your walls --
in any case, roses add that cozy
English charm to a room.

This was great. We have been taking walking tours in England and have ridden our bicycles from the very bottom at Lands' End to the top of Scotland at John O'Groat. One of my favorite parts of these excursions is staying in the old B and B's that just are loaded with this type of decor.
ReplyDeleteThis was a very interesting and informative post about English decor. Thank you for sharing your thoughts~
ReplyDeleteI have some of most...no canes, no old English oak! Ha. My heritage is almost all English...with my first family coming to Birginia in the 1650s. Not a typo...ha! I have traveled England from top to bottom via train...and love all. We downsized from our large Georgian...that people said looked like an old English estate. Now..I work on my ranch style! English furnishings/style. Great post for traditionalists like me. I worry I have too much stuff...but I guess that is part of the English look/vibe.

Such a beautiful post Alison...love everything you presented and showcased...and adore the crocks...i am always on the lookout for them as I have several and want more!! Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteAs much as I love French decorating I always seem to end up with a room that is more English in style...these are the things that delight me and I want to live and spend time with.
ReplyDeleteYou have given us some wonderful ideas and beautiful inspirations ~ Thank you!
I knew I'd love this post as soon as I saw the title pop up on my sidebar! And I was right. Love it all and agree with it all.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
This is so my style. Our home is filled to the brim with all the things you have mentioned. Many of my friends decorate their homes in a more minimalistic contemporary design. Though lovely, I could never feel at home in with all the cool grays and trim furnishings. It's so comforting to know that there are others who appreciate the English Country Home style. Thanks for a delightful post!
