Do you love a magnolia like I do?
I love it for its sweet fragrant blossoms
in the spring
and I love it
for its shiny rust-backed leaves
that make perfect additions
when tucked into holiday greens.

 MAGNOLIA

  • The flower is associated with nobility,
perseverance, dignity and a love of nature.

Magnolias are often used in flower arrangements
    such as wedding bouquets
to represent the purity and dignity of the bride.
    They are popular in Southern-style
weddings because the flower is often identified with the South.

  1. Oh my, I had to go through these pictures twice! How I wish we could get magnolia leaves up here for decorating with. They are so shiny and pretty. I wonder if we could get a florist to make up something in our area?

    Jane

  2. Alison, thanks for all these inspiration images. We don't have a magnolia tree, but our neighbor does. She is gracious about allowing me to use leaves from her tree during the holidays. I like to use them on our mantel. ~ Sarah

  3. Alison,

Where do you even find magnolia leaves out here? I would love some olive branches while you're at it! LOL! Laurel and Bay, too, if you have 'em!

I usually buy greens from the Tree Farm or Home Depot. I really don't like plastic Christmas decorations. The plastic smell is *squinches nose*.
I loved these photos! I am going on a Pinerest spree now!

  6. I have a magnolia tree in my back yard now, so I'm going to have to pin some of these pictures! I used some in my fall mantel display and they lasted a really long time.

  7. Alison, I was JUST looking at ideas for incorporating magnolia leaves into my greens for the mantel! No magnolia trees around here; but, I'll be going home to Louisiana next week!! Hopefully, I can stock up!

  8. These photos are so beautiful. I didn't realize the back of the magnolia leaf is rust coloured. It looks nice against the greenery. I usually only buy a real fir wreath to hang on the front door. They are hand made locally and I add a bow and some other decor to them. I also gather fresh greens from our trees to put in containers on our decks. They stay out all winter. Actually, they get frozen in the dirt so I can't toss them until spring thaw! lol

    Happy Monday to you...

  17. I'm a sucker for all the natural looking Christmas decorations. Coming from the North West as a child, then the South West, to me those elements are Christmas.

  19. I had planned to incorporate Magnolia leaves and pods in my Holiday decor. I had it all planned.... boughs on the mantel, the table center piece, the entryway. Those glossy leaves with the copper backs all over the house. But alas, the tree is gone ( see my Blog post Magnolia Grandiflora) My sweet neighbours had to cut it down as it was messing up their drain filed. Sooooo had to rethink Christmas. Until... yes, until another friend offered me as many branches as my lil ole heart desired. I am back on!!!!
Can you tell just how much I luv and miss the Magnolia grandi flora that was next door. Thanks for sharing the inspirational pictures..
    Cheers, Gee

  20. And to think Alison we have two enormous magnolia trees and I almost never use the leaves in my decor. I should be ashamed.

All those LOVELIES you shared just enchant me to no end (we leaved in Georgia for many years, & I ADORED, & had mannnny magnolias everywhere" on the property!)...

That Southern Accents pic, with the beautifully subdued, creamy whites & surrounding healthy greenery w/ the antler/head is just SOOOOOO "what I like" (THAT look is to mer, PRICELESS!!!)!!! (I was able to collect MANY mounted reh deer antlers when living in Germany all those years... I just loved them, they were "not in fashion and so were very inexpensive!!!).

That other photo where you can see some stone around the front doors, with paned glass on each side of tghe door, look SOOOOO warm n' welcoming!!! I just LOVE it!!!

Have been working ALL DAY LONG for a few days, as we're having alot of friends over for a "casual" cocktail party tomorrow night while election returns come in... I... am... pooped, but I SO LOVE doing things like this!!!

  26. Allison,

These are beautiful example of the many ways to decorate with magnolia leaves...but my favorite is the wreath with the nuts, greens and leaves!

I may have to try to make something, we have a huge tree and there are still flowers blooming on them.

    Take care, Elizabeth

  29. Alison, The house I grew up in had a huge magnolia tree in the front yard. Every Christmas my mother would use the leaves to make beautiful wreaths and garland. Thanks for sharing the pictures and bringing back happy memories.
